What is oil hardening?

Oil hardening is achieved by quenching components from above the austenitising temperature into oil at a suitable rate to achieve the formation of martensite.

It is limited to steels with a carbon content of 0.3% and above. To achieve suitable engineering properties, a post hardening temper is required to modify the structure and the hardness.

Oil hardening capacity

We operate an Ipsen sealed quench furnace through which we can offer oil hardening treatments. For several customers, we offer special loading arrangements and jig tempering which can remove some of the distortion arising from the process.

Currently we only process a small amount of oil hardening but as we progress through 2008 we will be able to bring on stream a shaker hearth furnace specially adapted to enable us to handle far greater volumes of this type of work.
